Then we’ll go.† I left the castle for one of its courtyards, a wide, terraced area that I loved. Saguaros and blooming prickly pears lined it. Purple-flowered smokethorns, the tree that had given this land its name, stood sentry, as did mesquite, filling the air with sweetness. A few hummingbirds darted here and there like bright, flying gemstones. I sat on one of the steps that led to the upper gardens and closed my eyes. This was why I had to come back. If left to me, I would have never returned. But once the Thorn Land had bound itself to me, it was mine. It depended on me for its survival. I didn’t entirely understand my connection to it, but it was unbreakable. It was the reason I dreamed about this place. There was no escaping it. The sun beat down on me, forever reminding us we answered to nature in the end. My body relaxed, and soon, the life of the land spread into me. It always startled me at first, and then I quickly adapted, like it was the most natural thing in the world. The land was me, and I was the land. We were one, neither of us complete without the other. When I came to, I think almost an hour had passed. I stood up, shaking off my trance. I had extracted myself from that joining with the land but knew it was still with me. It was stronger for having just made the connection. I had fulfilled my duty. My party set out shortly thereafter. Horse riding was a skill I’d had to perfect pretty quickly since hanging out around here. There were no cars or planes. Shaya, Rurik, and Nia were with me, as were about a dozen guards. The guards rode stoically, eyes alert and watchful as they surrounded us. Rurik occasionally barked out an order to them, but mostly he bantered with Shaya and flirted with Nia. I wasn’t too good at casual conversation and mostly just listened, more entertained by them than I wanted to admit. It was late morning, and the sun showed us no mercy as we traveled. I fared better than the rest, wearing shorts and sunglasses. The other women at least had lightweight dresses, but the men wore full leather armor and had to suffer considerably. None of them complained, not even Rurik, but sweat poured down their faces. So, it was something of a relief when we hit our first shift in the land. It’s an oddity of the Otherworld that it folds in upon itself. Traveling is disorienting. In going in a straight line out of my kingdom, it was entirely possible to cross other kingdoms and then my own again without deviating from our course. We crossed into the Oak Land, and suddenly it was as though the Thorn Land had never existed. You couldn’t even see it behind us. One of the guards broke his rigid demeanor to emit a small cheer that made everyone laugh. A cool, almost chill breeze rushed over us. Late autumn had settled on the Oak Land, setting the trees on fire with brilliant colors. It was gorgeous-and much more comfortable-but I secretly hoped we’d pass out of it soon. I had too many disturbing memories of this place. Sure enough, we soon crossed into the Thorn Land again, slamming into that unforgiving heat. It felt like traveling in circles, but the others assured me we stayed on course. That stint was brief, and our next shift took us to the Rowan Land. Late summer ruled here, but it was a more temperate summer than my own kingdom’s. Cherry trees filled the landscape. Last I’d seen them, pink blossoms had covered almost every square inch of the branches. Now, as I looked closer, I could see bright red fruit weighing them down. And it was then that the wights attacked. Wights were denizens of the Otherworld, and while they weren’t spirits exactly, they had the ability to turn invisible. So, my guards’ vigilance had done no good. I counted seven as they swooped out of the orchards. They wore gray clothing and had long, pale faces. For the most part, they looked very much like humans and gentry. Light flared around them as they rained down bolts of power upon us. Wights were even more strongly tied to magic than the gentry, and conventional weapons had little effect on them. You had to take them down with magic. Unfortunately, the storm magic I’d inherited from my father still wasn’t quite up to hardcore attacks. Neither was my guards’ magic. Special magic-wielding soldiers aside, I’d learned most warriors here were weak in magic; it was why they’d chosen a more physical profession. I took this as a good sign I would find a fountain of enlightened material produced by the man. I've had to go through a bit of my own philosophical meditations to put my own value judgements aside, and truly look for the contributions Nietzsche gave to philosophy. Tim Burton is a director; he has directed and produced many films which are strange and out of the ordinary. The films, including Batman and Beetle juice have a distinctive genre, fantasy. Johnny Depp is renowned for his extraordinary parts in films, but he is at his best here playing a role he understands as well as anyone, an outcast. From past films we the audience can expect a film with a fantasy storyline. The film promises a magical, but weird experience. We can expect the Burton film to be very fantasy like with a character who does not appear to be like a human (Batman, Beetle juice). Before either the film or the credits start we see a 20th century fox advertisement. The advertisement is different to past adverts. The logo is the same, but we see snow falling around it. I acknowledged this and I believe it has a connection with the film by the indication of the snow. This also sets the tone. Its different and unconventional.  When the film starts we see the credits of the entire cast, which run over the beginning of the film. The credits are scissor-rific which hints at whats to come. They are also in an italic, thin font, like the writing for Citizen Kane. This also suggests and hints at horror because of the dark background and the scissor like credits. Scissors propose to me danger and implicate cutting whether to paper or something else. Whilst all this is going on we can hear a non-diegetic sound, which sounds eerie, but fantasy like. This gives a small clue in establishing the genre. The start of the film, in which the credits run over, is the establishment of some of the environment. Upon entrance to an unknown building it is as if we are going to be told a story (fantasy like). We see inventions, a staircase and a pair of scissors. The inventions are a point-of-view shot and also a tracking shot. This is because us, the audience has been introduced into a new environment and we are constructing a visual image of our surroundings. It gives us information, which later on in the film helps us to understand what has been going on in Edward Scissorhands life. The editing is straight cut and dissolving. This makes the audience keep guessing at whats to come. It also keeps the audiences interest because they want to know what happens. It is dark in the building, with low-key lighting, which produces a sharp contrast of dark and light areas on the screen as very deep, distinct shadows are formed. The effect of this is we become aware that there is a hint of horror in the film. The dark lighting effects cause the awareness.  Stars and other shapes appear on the screen one by one. They look like biscuits. The sound when the biscuits appear on the screen is unfriendly and unfamiliar. It is a non-diegetic sound. The biscuits on screen are fantasy like and the sound is horror like. This makes us wonder what is going to happen and keeps our interest because we think it is very odd that biscuits are appearing on the screen. What have biscuits got to do with anything? We are then focused on a pair of hands and the camera then gradually zooms away from them. They are pale and look set. The hands are gradually faded out until we can see them no more. The consequence of the hands is it leaves us the feeling of cold and death that has happened or going to occur.  Our attention is then drawn to an eye. It is a close-up shot and once again the camera moves away from the object it is focusing on, but this time in a spiral way. As the camera moves progressively outwards we can see the face of an old, pale, lifeless man. Once again horror is suggested here. Next, as the man fades and dissolves into the background, snow appears at the foreground. After a few frames of snow, the snow starts to fade and from the background appears a house on a hill (horror). The house looks haunted and later on in the film we discover this house, or mansion is where we saw the inventions and the old man. The view of the house, hill and snow looks like a snow dome. The fading and dissolving, and the background and foreground effects create a mysterious tone, once again keeping the audiences attention and interest. The house on the hill is another example and theme of horror. The distance from the house and the camera increases and we are now in a room. We know this because in front of us is a window with a woman looking out at the house. This is a point-of-view shot. We are now introduced to a character. It is the woman looking out of the window. We hear her speak for the first time. Her voice is friendly and aimed towards another new character. The voice of the woman speaking is diegetic and on screen. We now feel safe and secure in the house and our interest is kept by us wondering who these characters are and what they have to do with the film. The mise-en-scene of the room in which we are in with the two characters is brightly decorated, in vivid yellows. This is a contrast to the view of the house outside the window. The yellows make me feel that the characters in the room are nice and friendly, because if they werent I think the room would be decorated differently, perhaps in black.  In the room are a fire and a lamp. These are two light sources. The fire creates a sense of warmth and friendliness by the glow, which is also in contrast to the house outside. The camera follows the old woman to the bedside of our second character. The second character is a young girl. She is tucked in a double bed. The girl looks lost in the bed. This is ironic because the bed suggests security to the young girl. We learn of the relationship between the two characters when the little girl says, Why is it snowing Grandma?. The woman sets about telling the child about Edward Scissorhands. The audiences interest is still kept because we are now finding out about whom we think the film is all about (because of the name of the film).

The location of each biome is determined by the regional climate. Deserts are dry areas that experience extremely small amounts of rainfall. Many people assume falsely that all deserts are hot. This is not the case as deserts can be either hot or cold. The determining factor for considering a biome to be a desert is the lack of precipitation, which can be in various forms (rain, snow, etc.). A desert is classified according to its location, temperature, and amount of precipitation. The extreme dry conditions of the desert biome makes it difficult for plant and animal life to thrive. Organisms that make their home in the desert have specific adaptations to deal with the harsh environmental conditions. Climate Deserts are determined by low amounts of precipitation, not temperature. They typically receive less than 12 inches or 30 cm of rain per year. The driest deserts often receive less than a half an inch or 2 cm of rain per year. Temperatures in the desert are extreme. Because of the lack of moisture in the air, heat quickly dissipates as the sun sets. In hot deserts, the temperatures can range from above 100 °F (37 °C) in the day to below 32 °F (0 °C) at night. Maryland in 1819 enacted a statute that imposed tax on all existing banks that operated in Maryland and not chartered by the state. The statute stated that all such existing banks were prohibited from issuing notes upon stamped paper which was issued by the state. Also, the statute set forth a given fee that was supposed to be paid for the paper plus it established penalties for violating it. Maryland came with these policies in order to govern commerce within its own state (Richard 23). The Second Bank of the United States became established in 1816 following an act of congress (Catterall & Henry 15). McCulloch, a cashier at the Bank of the United States in Baltimore branch decided one time to issue bank notes which did not comply to Maryland law. Hence, Maryland sued McCulloch for not paying taxes due according to Maryland statute and McCulloch contested for the constitutionality of that given act (Richard 23). From the case, it was found out that the Congress ha d the power under the formed constitution to incorporate a given bank pursuant according to Article 1 section 8. In addition, it was found out from the ruling that the State of Maryland did not have the necessary power to tax a given institution that was created by the Congress according to the formed constitution. The decision by the Supreme Court in favor of McCulloch after he appealed to them proved that the Commerce clause was powerful in making such decision (Hale 86). In as much as Maryland had some rights in imposing laws in its own state, it proved that the Congress also had some powers in influencing some major decisions in the Court system. Hence, the government in place though usually limited in its power, but got supreme authority when it comes to issues of implementing laws that had been made under the constitution. Humorous Wedding Speech by Friend of Groom Ladies and gentlemen, thanks Gary for those kind words. It has been a pleasure for all us attendants to play a small part in your big day. Before I say a word or two about the groom, what about that dress Jeanie is wearing? It has attracted so much favorable comment from the guests here that I have to give it a special mention. You look stunning Jeanie! When Gary asked me to be his best man I immediately thought of the speech. I saw it as an opportunity to talk about a great hero of mine†¦ a wonderful, handsome, kind-hearted man who is admired by many. But then I showed it to my wife and she ripped it up saying, ‘For once in your life Jason, talk about someone other than yourself!’ But unlike many of the best men you’ve probably encountered over the years – who were either old school friends or childhood friends of the groom – Gary and I actually met about six years ago. So not knowing an awful lot about his past, I made enquiries – at his local police station. I thought that would be a good place to start digging for dirt. But they had nothing to say†¦ except that he was the perfect guest whenever he stayed over. Next, I sought advice from his parents as to what he was like. ‘A model son driven by the ambition to succeed,’ was the answer from his mum. ‘A gentleman, a scholar and a sportsman,’ said his dad. Now, I know what you're all thinking - is this the same Gary? Well, all of this was indeed contradicted by his brother Stewart, who informed me that as a child, Gary was cheeky, naughty and the loudest kid on the estate. And as you may have judged from his earlier speech, not a lot has changed. To get a different perspective on the star of the day I contacted Gary’s school friends. Unfortunately, none of them volunteered any information – except one, who said his nickname ‘PlayByYourselfGary’ should provide some indication of his popularity with the other pupils. In the end I visited his old school to speak to some of his former teachers in the hope they could provide me with an amusing story to tell. The first person I got hold of was his math’s teacher of five years.

Some strategic advantages of performance appraisals are that it can provide a record of performance over a period of time.Meaning that if you have been on the job for 5 years and the current appraisal is not up to par the employer can go back and look at past appraisals and see if it’s worth it to fix the problem to keep you or let you go. They provide an opportunity for a manager to meet and discuss performance with an employee. In larger companies an HR manager may hardly ever see the employees; by doing the performance appraisal it allows for a one on o ne with each employee.Another strategic advantage is the appraisal provides the employee with feedback about their performance and how they completed their goals. Thus it also opens up the subject of how the employee could improve on the lower rated performances and provides an opportunity for an employee to discuss issues and to clarify expectations with their manager. Finally some strategic advantages could be an opportunity to think about the upcoming year and develop employee goals and can be motivational with the support of a good reward and compensation system.Some potential forms of bias within the appraisal system could be a Personality conflict between a manager and an employee and this could cause the manager to inaccurately assess an employee's contributions to an organization. The manager could be comparing the skills and contributions of one employee to another and it could result in an unfair assessment of the employees. A manager should be assessing an employee's perf ormance after a pre-determined amount of time. A first-impression performance appraisal isn't enough time to make an assessment.It has the potential to be swayed either positively or negatively. A manager should never rate an employee's performance based on recent behavior rather than on past performance. If an employee has a spotless record except for a recent mistake, the manager should not forget all of the good he or she has done. The last potential form of bias with in the appraisal system is that a manager should avoid political bias. This happens when non-performance related issues cloud the judgment of a performance appraiser such as religious beliefs or lifestyle choices.
